Great site! Especially the section on health and disease (book marked for later). We are just getting started raising pet and meat rabbits. Our buck, an Opal Rex, is so friendly and such a great personality - deffinatly the best breed I have ever worked with. Thanks again for the great site.

Hello Sydney,
The ARBA standard of perfection says that a broken must have a minimum of 10% color, but they must also have colored ears, eye rings, and they must have at least one spot of color in the whisker bed around the nose.
On the other end of the spectrum a rabbit cannot have too much color. (over 50% color is considered too much). So, if a blanket of color carries too much down the sides with very little white, than that is a disqualification.
So, 10% to 50% is showable. Blanket pattern -most color-like a blanket of color over the back and down the sides. Butterfly pattern-the spine is colored, and spots on each side of the rabbit touching the spine marking. Open pattern-a spine marking of color, and spots on each side-but they do not touch the spine marking. Dalmatian pattern- spots all around but no spine marking-this is not a charlie, but a pattern.
Cracked- a broken rabbit that has very little white-maybe a spot of white on the nose and white boots.
A charlie-a rabbit that has 2 broken genes. A charlie can be showable if they have all the required markings plus a minimum of 10% color.
Candace
how much coloring does a broken have to have in order for it to be eligible to show?

Hello Linda,
If a rabbit has been given an antibiotic-you must wait 30-60 days before butchering before it has been eliminated from the body. If a rabbit has been given ivermectin-you must wait 90 days before butchering before it has been eliminated from the body. It does not ruin the meat, but traces will be found in muscle tissue until after this time frame.
Candace

does Ivermictin ruin the rabbit meat so that you can not eat it?

Hi,
My daughter and I just adopted a T rex bunny who is white with light brown spots. My daughter named it S'mores. I thought I'd share it with you.
Have a great day,
ps. my friend's bunny's name is Muffin.

I have a Rex that I bought from a co-worker and I love him to pieces! He is so adorable! I though I might add his name to the list of good names. We noticed how the marking across the nose looked like a bow, so we toyed around with names that included Bo and came up with Bo Diddley (yes, the famous blues player). I think it's a perfect bunny name!

I learned so much on your site. Wish I had found it years ago when we first brought our "Soft" home. She was a chocolate mini rex who was one of our best buddies for 5 years until she died in May from an infected sore on her left hock. Such a sweet bunny she was!

Hi
Good site. I have just received a new unneutered rescue rabbit.he is Rex with lovey pleasant tempererament. he is to go in with two Englih Spot does who's Dutch boy recently I had to put down. i have now 8 bunnies again.I am not a breeder, just -home them when they need a new home. I wont breed from the Rex so am having him neutered but am intrigued by his colouras he looks like a chesnut, Dark dark almost black chestnut brown all over with no patches. anyway we have called him 'Chesterfield' after the furniture. Is this a cmmon colour for Rex's? he camefrom a pet shop where he had been returned as the owner was moving and they put him up for adoption.
I have never had a Rex before but he is a lovely lad. Although i wonder if they're more prone to the heat stroke as it is so thick? he seems to love the hay and grass (good sign!) and has settled into his new home in a week. He lets me stroke himand has enjoyed seeing all the other bunnies in their cages.
Anyway, other names for bunnies we have are; S0X (white feet-like socks) and Miss Cornelia. The bunny we had recently I had to haveput down was called BLAZE. As that's not on your listhe would be plesed tothink a bunny had been named after him.
With love
Sandra

Hello! My name is Jo-Ann. I am just starting my rabbitry of standard Rex. I am about 40 min. north of Toronto, Ontario Canada. It is real hard to find Standard Rex here. We have plenty of Mini Rex. Love your website. I am amazed to see so many Rex's at once. Keep up the good work!

We just had our rex rabbitt only about 4 mmonths now so Im still studying up alot on how to take care of our "Mixey Moo" the best. (This is the 1st bunny we've ever owned!) Loved your site, great info, expecially listing all the vareties of food we can give our Rex now as Im sure shes bored with fresh broccoli & parlsey by now lol
Thx again! Anita

Thank you so much for posting all this awesome info! I just got two Rex rabbits - one is a Lilac Jr. Buck and the other is a Black Otter Jr. Buck. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about Rex rabbits, especailly for Showmanship in 4-H! Last year, I got 2nd place with my friend's Mini Rex, so we'll see how well I can do this year!
To Jenny Williams - As far as I know, you shouldn't feed alfalfa to a very young bunny. The earliest I would say that you can feed alfalfa to a rabbit would be 12 weeks, or even later, just to be safe. You're supposed to avoid feeding many greens to a baby rabbit because their digestive system can't take too much greens. I would say that Timothy hay is good for all ages, and you should save the alfalfa for an older bunny. Hope this helps! ![]()

Hello! I just wanted to post a comment and say this website really helped me out today!! I wanted to know more about what my baby Jack "Rabbit" ( Californian breed) could eat! He really enjoyed the small slice of banana and fresh corn husk yall recommeded for a treat!! Thank for the help!! Will be back again soon to look around!
-Lindsey McDonald and Jack : )

I have a question...In your website you say that hay is ok to feed your rabbit. What do you mean by hay...grass hay or alfalfa hay? We just had a 6 week old bunny die and I can't figure out what could of caused it but the alfalfa we started to put in their cage to add another choice to eat besides the rabbit pellets. Is this what caused the death? It looked like the mini rex bunny just layed down and spread out a little and died.
Thanks, Jenny

I am buying a rex to show and this site was very helpful! thanks! ![]()

Greg P. says...
Rex rabbits are one of the most intelligent breeds I've raised, second only to French Lop, compared to Angora, Satin, Neth Dwarf, Mini Lop, English Lop, Holland Lop, and Mini Rex. My housebunny was a Flemish Giant X Rex named Ruth: 14 lbs of fun and games. She would ride on the vacumn sweeper, chased the cats, and let the Amazon parrot ride on her when she had on her harness. She stayed out of reach of curious beaks when there was no harness to give a beak- or toe - hold! You'll always remember Thumper, but a new bunny will capture your heart and help heal the pain of losing Thumper. Good luck in your quest! MadellaI had a rex rabbit for 9 years 3 months and she just passed away at 10 years of age on Tuesday the 5/25/10... This was the most unique rabbit I ever owned, plus she was my first pet, she was very smart, knew certain words such as carrot, knew that one very well! I hope to find another close to what Thumper was? I sure do miss her very much!

Very nice site. I and my daughter raised 9 breeds in an old horsebarn in Buckeye, AZ. Our fav breed was Rex and then mini rex came along. We had the first two trios in Az from Ca back in 1991. I am in Georgia now and bought a broken fawn doe at the local livestock auction mid Aug. She is a doll baby! Too bad I didn't know her bunnies were at the auction too. I'd love to find a Rex breeder here in Ga or eastern Al. Thanks for bringing back some great memories!

LOVE the website! I am a 4H leader and fair superintendant for Owyhee County and I am always looking for info to pass on.

Please check out my chicken and rabbit website http://roostershamblin.wordpress.com/

I have a sausage book written by a Master which is used by chefs to learn how to do it right...your recipes look maaahhhvelous daaahhhling! I can't wait to try them. Do you sell rabbit meat so I can try them that way? 478-9004.
By the way, your site is really nice...lotsa info. XO, S

I love your web site. Lots of good information for the 4-H kids to learn and to know for showing their rabbits.

I just wanted to tell you that I came upon your website looking for some information for my 4-H members. I am a rabbit advisor and your site has been extremely helpful! Thank you.
